Struck again

At about 11 p.m. on Sunday night, a car hit the fire hydrant on the small traffic island at the intersection of Brereton and Dobson.  It certainly wasn’t the first time this has happened, but this proved to be the last straw; the hydrant broke off.  The driver fled the scene.  Police are asking that anyone who witnessed the accident to come forward.

On Monday, a resident saw two young men in an old blue pick-up truck attempt to “reclaim” the fire hydrant, which had been placed on the sidewalk next to the monument.  Apparently, it was too heavy to lift and just then some people passed by, so the guys jumped back into their truck and fled.

And now the broken-off hydrant is gone.  Did they come back when it was quieter, and manage to get the hydrant into their truck?  Or did the City pick it up?  We’ll probably never know.  But just as this post was being written, a City crew pulled up and installed a new hydrant.  Thanks, City crew.  We hope it’s a sturdy one.

  1. Wouldn’t you have that on camera from the PHCA office?

  2. Hi Jeannie,

Unfortunately, none of the PHCA cameras are pointed at the middle of the intersection. However, a resident whose home overlooks the intersection reported that the vehicle was damaged so badly that it had to be towed away, so it should be fairly easy to track down the driver.
